"Area Teams Roll Into Holiday Play"
By Patrick MacCoon
Bucking what seemed to have become a trend over the past several seasons, a local basketball program is red-hot as Christmas nears.
Over the past three seasons, which includes a state tournament appearance in 2016 and two district championship appearances, Walker Valley had a combined record of 14-18 before Dec. 19.
Not looking for one-on-one matchups or superstar play, the Mustangs have flowed together as a unit to a 10-1 start for a promising new era under first-year head coach Will Campbell. Instead of slowing its offense down and using a lot of motion like in the past, they have hit the floor running and gunning while always working for the best look.
While in the past football players consumed a great deal of the starting lineup on the hardcourt, the majority of starters had all Fall to prepare in team workouts and practices. Junior standout Noah Duprey is the lone starter who played football, which coaches and teammates believe has helped him gain extra strength for his rise. Duprey has helped spark a strong attack (74 points per game), which uses screens and drive-and-dish mentality to create high percentage looks. The 6-foot-3 post player has shot close to 70 percent on the season and is a stout shot-blocking presence as well with over two rejections per game.
Senior guards Alex Duke and Munck have shone in leadership roles to go along with sharp vision. Both have been able to get the offense rolling via unselfish play as they both have point guard characteristics.
Intense offseason workouts and practicing plays until they look nearly perfect, success has come from a constant grind and team camaraderie.
Walker Valley has played a brand of basketball easy and fun to watch. It is not of the new school, isolation mentality where one player can take over a game. There most likely will not be a 30-point game from any player this season, as the scoring attack is balanced.
Junior Blake Campbell is sinking nearly 50 percent of his 3-point attempts, creating a constant worry for opposing defenders. Sometimes even making opponent's have to face guard and do all they can to try and limit Campbell's splashes. With strong guard play, a senior forward in Luke Wallace has established himself as a consistent rebounding force and a opportunistic scorer. Size is not a plus for the Mustangs, but Wallace and Duprey will battle with the best of them for boards. Not to mention, depth is a plus for Coach Campbell's team as well with junior Braden Davis along with Jake Smith and Sam Belau having made positive contributions off the bench.
A team picked fifth out of seven teams in the District 5-AAA preseason polls, Walker Valley has quickly become a hard to stop force on the hardwood.
The Mustangs have shown they are quick to go on runs and create turnovers against. They will look to keep the good vibes rolling as they head down to the Chat-town Classic at Cleveland State where they will play Red Bank (Friday, 8:30 p.m.) and Sonoraville (Ga.) at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Lady Mustangs will play Meigs County (Friday, 2:30 p.m.) and Heritage (Ga.) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

"Talkin' Hoops"
By Patrick MacCoon
LADY MUSTANGS
Walker Valley's Abbey Davis will create problems for anyone she goes against with a strong aggressiveness to the hoop and ability to drain from outside. A strong addition of Madison Rue has helped aid the replacement of Haley Jones in the paint, where Tasia Roberts has also stepped up. The Lady Mustangs (4-5, 1-2) were neck-and-neck with East Hamilton Tuesday before careless passes in the third quarter led to their demise. With a slew of guards to deploy, this group will need it's outside shooting and precision passes to help carry them.
MUSTANGS
With strong offseason development and execution on the court, an overlooked group in the postseason has blown the socks off many. The senior leadership of Jordan Munck, Alex Duke and Luke Wallace has been impeccable, while Braden Davis, Noah Duprey and Blake Campbell have shown solid progression for a well-equipped group starting a new era. Duprey has shot a remarkable 67 percent from the floor and averages two-plus blocks per game. Walker Valley (8-1, 3-1) was a mere whistle away from being 9-0 after a layup attempt at the final buzzer at East Hamilton did not draw a foul call. However, this is a group that won't go away, and won't let a stinging overtime loss sidetrack them. The Mustangs' heavy screen-based attack can create problems for many as the "blue collar" group of the district will not be slept on.
